QUESTION: I read the ball reviews with great intrest and can pretty well judge the difference between balls but would like to know what the numbers refer to (hook, length, breakpoint shape). If I am asking a question that was answered in the past, I apologize in advance.

JOE CERAR ANSWERS: I base the numbers after testing on at least two different lane surfaces and 4 different oil patterns. The hook number refers to the hook potential and is used for comparative reasons. Balls garnering a hook rating between 36-43 are best suited for drier or shorter oil patterns, medium oil conditions should match up well with balls rated between 43-49 and balls 49 and above with often give their best look on heavier and longer patterns. Naturally, bowler rev rates and ball speed can skew these numbers some.

Regarding the length rating: This refers to the cover's strength, and the higher the number, generally the longer a ball travels before it begins it breakpoint motion towards the pocket. Balls rated 13 or lower respond earlier and are best suite for higher speed players and heavier and longer oil patterns. Balls 13 to 15 display medium length and balls 15 and higher tend to react the latest when encountering friction.

The breakpoint shape numbers: These are very important regarding the ball path shape. This number refers to the angularity of a ball’s path in the last twenty feet or so. The quicker and stronger a ball reacts to friction, the higher the breakpoint shape rating. Balls 14 or lower have a slower reaction in this regard and arc the most. Balls 14-15.5 will respond slightly more, and balls 15.5 and higher will posses the most breakpoint angularity potential.
